The Story
Mike Cousins is a quiet, methodical fisherman who has worked the inshore Gulf of Maine for 20 years from Kennebunkport. The Blue Runner is his second boat — a 38-foot day boat he runs with one deckhand, his nephew Tyler. They set gillnets for grey sole and switch to otter trawl for hake depending on the season. Mike’s operation is small — 600 to 900 pounds on a good day — but his grey sole commands premium prices because buyers know it’s gillnet-caught, handled carefully, and at the Exchange within 8 hours. He doesn’t have a website or an Instagram. He has a boat, a reputation, and 20 years of showing up at the pier with clean fish. The Exchange is where fishermen like Mike get a fair shake — his product is displayed, graded, and bid on just like the big boats.
