The Story
Eben Philbrick has fished the Gulf of Maine since he was 14, learning the trade from his father on a 28-foot lobster boat out of South Portland. The Whitecap is his third vessel and his first purpose-built for day-boat groundfishing — commissioned in 2023 from a Thomaston yard, designed around one principle: get the fish on ice faster than anyone else. He leaves Portland Pier before 3am, tows Jeffreys Ledge for hake and haddock, and is back at the Exchange by 9am with catch iced within 8 minutes of landing. His freshness scores consistently top 90.
